Some numbers to think about...
-
Over 75% of state
prison inmates are dropouts and each costs $25,000 per year (Center
for Dropout Prevention)

-
Almost 82% of youth
offenders are dropouts and juvenile incarceration costs $60,000 per
year
-
Total social costs for
each of America's dropouts is about $69,000 per lifetime (Council of
Economic Advisors)
-
One year after leaving
high school, 39% of dropouts are unemployed or not in school as
compared to 9% of high school graduates (Manhattan Research
Institute)
-
Dropouts earn $9,200 a
year less than high school graduates (Center for Dropout Prevention)
High School Dropouts Are:
-
Twice as likely to be
unemployed during the remainder of their working lives
-
Three times as likely
to end up in our courts
-
Six times as likely
to be an unwed parent
North Carolina dropout rate for 2005-2006
school year: 5.04% (NC
Department of Public Instruction)
Dropping out of school is a
catastrophe for young people and a crisis for the United States.
Communities In
Schools (CIS)
is America’s largest organization focused on integrating schools and
community. CIS coordinates the delivery of desperately needed
resources—mentoring, tutoring, health care, family strengthening,
career development, summer and after-school programs, service-learning
and much more—right into the public schools. By bringing caring adults
into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the
link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are
free to teach and students—many in jeopardy of dropping out—have the
opportunity to focus on learning.
Celebrating
nearly 30 years, CIS is reversing the dropout trend in more than 3,250
schools in 27 states, and the District of Columbia. With the help of
nearly 53,000 volunteers, state and local CIS affiliates
consistently
produce improved outcomes for students—higher grades, better
attendance and behavior, increased promotion and graduation rates.
Compare: U.S.
taxpayers spend more than $22 billion annually to keep dropouts in
state prisons. CIS costs about $168 annually for each student served.
The bottom line: 98 percent of CIS-tracked students
stayed in school last year.
