How We Serve
We broker and deliver services as requested by the schools to met the
individual needs of our students.
Volunteers - We recruit, train, and
manage volunteers for the four schools of the Perquimans County System
and for community agencies as requested. During the current school
year, our volunteer force numbers more than 120! Our VISTA
volunteer is developing a database to help the Perquimans system more
effectively track and manage their volunteer force. We need your
time (volunteer in any of our programs), your talents (mentor a young
person and share your special gifts), and your money.
Sight for Students - This program
provides free eye care and eyewear to low income and uninsured
students. The VISTA volunteer for Communities in Schools
facilitates this program for several area school systems.
Teen Court - Youth driven
arm of the juvenile justice system designed to defer first time teen
offenders from the juvenile courts, thereby relieving crowded court
calendars and providing more timing service to youth and families.
Two models are used in Perquimans County - In School Peer Jury Model
and Adult Judge Model. Ten students have been served this year
engaging nine adult volunteers and twenty-three youth volunteers. The
youth volunteers serve as jurors, attorneys, bailiffs, and clerks.
Judicial Attendance Council - A community
based initiate that unites representatives of twelve community
agencies. The goal is to problem solve and develop an action plan for
families of children referred by schools for truancy issues.
Communities in Schools facilitates two sessions per month and provides
case management/follow-up. Thirteen families have been served in the
elementary, middle, and high school of our county.
Strengthening Families - This nationally
recognized seven-week program encourages families of ten to fourteen
year olds to strengthen their parenting skills, communication, and
relationships. It gives families the tools to weather the stresses of
the teen years. Families come to this program via court, Department
of Social Services, and school referrals. Communities in Schools has
served twenty-five families. Funding for this program has come from a
Governor's Crime Commission Grant.
Gang Awareness - Communities in Schools
provides gang awareness workshops to all interested communities in the
Albemarle Region. Seventy-six leaders of the education, law
enforcement, and faith community met in the first of these
informational seminars in April. The second workshop is planned for
August in Perquimans County.
Project K.E.Y.S. (Knowledge Enhances Your
Success) - This
is a stay-in-school incentive for high school juniors and seniors in
Perquimans and Chowan Counties. Students receive chances to win a new
car with first year's insurance, tags, and taxes paid by earning A's
and B's. Community partners show their willingness to participate in
the futures of our young people by making very real contributions to
this project.
Northeast North Carolina (N.E.N.C.)
Boat Show
- A regional event to support Communities in Schools and other child
serving non-profits of Perquimans County. It involves the business
community in serving the schools of our county. Forty businesses and
seventy-five volunteers raised $13,000 in the first year to better
serve the children of Perquimans.
